Construction is the same - just larger. The first brood box was 2 feet by 3 feet. This one is 3 feet by 4 feet, and should be large enough to house them until they go into breeder boxes.
We put a soft plastic mesh over the top of the new brood box, instead of hardware cloth. When startled, the chicks will begin to jump straight up, and they could injure themselves if they hit the hardware cloth.
The quail seem to love their new digs! We're down to 38 - one died Monday and another on Tuesday. We think they were two of the last to hatch and were weak to begin with. All the rest seem to be doing well...
except this little fellow - we're keeping a close eye on this one.
And as always, Daisy is eager to help us watch them - or taste them - whatever needs to be done! Such a helpful pup!
